La Razón: Hazlo #PorTuFamilia / The Reason: Do It #PorTuFamilia

My two most important reasons for being healthy.

I’ve always experienced health problems of one kind or another. Unfortunately, for that same reason, many other health precautions I should be taking have been left behind.

And unfortunate also is the reality of having a history of diabetes on both sides of my family– from many generations back. I’ve had relatives I never met because they passed away from complications due to diabetes. And I have family members today who have diabetes or pre-diabetes.

I’ve been evaluating my health habits– or lack thereof– and I’ve decided I want to fight this before it becomes problematic. I want to lose up to 15 pounds, little by little, to ensure that diabetes never happens to me. I have a family that loves me very much, and I want to be here for them always.

And that’s the most important reason I want to support the Latino Health Project and its initiative #PorTuFamilia.

We all have excuses for not making healthy decisions. However, we all have many reasons why we should commit to a healthy lifestyle.

My great friend and “hermano,” George “Urban Jíbaro” Torres, founder of Sofrito for Your Soul, started the Latino Health Project to make Latinos aware of the high risk we have of developing diabetes, and to motivate us to defeat this risk. Latinos have nearly double the rate of diabetes of non-Latino white people.

Join me in joining the conversation on Twitter, using the hashtag #PorTuFamilia when you share your stories of health and diabetes.

The social media campaign will culminate in a live event– the Health Fair on Diabetes, sponsored by the American Diabetes Association, at St. Mary’s Park in The Bronx, on August 17th from 11 a.m. to 6. p.m.

I have so many reasons to defeat health problems. What is your most important reason?

  1. This post couldn’t have come at a better time. I think I do well – but I could do better. I have plenty to be healthy for, and three daughters who need me!

  2. My father is diabetic for the past 30 years. However, my mom helps my dad manage his diabetes by cooking the healthiest meals and using organic ingredients as much as possible. I am grateful that my dad is well and managing his diabetes by taking a few oral medications. He is also very prompt on going to his regular check ups with his doctor every 3 months.

  3. Thank you for this important blog post, Laurita! I, too, have family members who have type 2 diabetes or have died to related complications. One thing I have noticed is that they tend to be women with A LOT on their plates. We need to take care of ourselves, ladies. Take time to cook and eat well and remain active or find healthy ways to de-stress.

  4. Laurita…

Thank you so much for your post (I love that it is bilingual) in highlighting the work that the #PorTuFamilia committee is doing across the country. This campaign is a build up to a huge Feria De Salud event in the Bronx on August 17th where we will be screening and educationg thousands of Latinos in just a few hours.

Please keep promoting great health content on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook using the #portufamilia hashtag so the we can keep educating our people online.

As always… my love to you and your loving parents!
