Hace cincuenta años, antes de que Toyota fuera un nombre conocido en los Estados Unidos, la compañía estaba poniendo sus vehículos a la prueba en las carreteras montañosas y escabrosas de mi país natal, Puerto Rico. Las exportaciones a Puerto Rico comenzaron con seis Land Cruisers en el 1956, y sólo trece años después, introdujeron al Corolla en la isla. Los carros de Toyota fueron un éxito rotundo. Rápido se convirtieron en una de las marcas de auto principales en Puerto Rico, y subsecuentemente, en los Estados Unidos.
Over 50 years ago, before Toyota was a household word in the U.S., the company was testing its cars on the rugged, mountainous roads of my home country of Puerto Rico. Exports to Puerto Rico started with six Land Cruisers in 1956, and just 13 years later, the Corolla was introduced on the island. Toyota’s cars were a resounding success. They quickly became one of the major car brands in Puerto Rico, and subsequently, in the U.S.
El año pasado comencé una relación con Toyota cuando me ofrecieron ser corresponsal de ellos durante Hispanicize. Este año, esa relación se fortaleció al ser escogida como embajadora de Toyota durante Hispanicize 2014.
Last year, I began a relationship with Toyota when they offered me the opportunity to be a correspondent for them during Hispanicize. This year, that relationship strengthened when I was chosen to be an ambassador for Toyota during Hispanicize 2014.
¡Me sentí muy entusiasmada cuando me enteré de que Toyota nos iba a prestar a mi y a mi familia una Lexus GX 460 para el viaje completo!
I was so excited when I found out that Toyota would be lending me and my family a Lexus GX 460 for the entire trip!

Hubo una sorpresa especial para todos los embajadores de Toyota. El 2 de abril, nos invitaron a un evento súper exclusivo, el Ride & Drive de Toyota. Consistió de dividirnos en distintos autos de Toyota en grupos de 3 o 4, algunos como choferes y otros, como yo, como pasajeros.
Dos representantes de relaciones públicas para Toyota y yo fuimos como pasajeras (¡yo al frente!), con Joscelyn Ramos Campbell manejando.
¡Viajamos esa tarde preciosa hasta Key Biscayne!
There was a special surprise for the Toyota ambassadors. On April 2nd, we were all invited to a super-exclusive event, the Ride & Drive by Toyota. It consisted of dividing us up in different Toyota vehicles in groups of three or four, some of us as drivers and others, like me, as passengers.
Two public relations representatives for Toyota and I rode as passengers (with me in the front seat!), with Joscelyn Ramos Campbell in the driver’s seat.
We traveled on that beautiful afternoon to Key Biscayne!
La otra sorpresa increíble es que los invitados especiales al almuerzo no éramos nosotros– eran Germán Quiroga y Daniel Suárez de NASCAR, dos jóvenes mexicanos que inspiran, y… ¡JennyLee Molina, la joven fundadora del movimiento 305 Cafecito en Miami! *Me desmayo.*
JennyLee lanzó un movimiento usando Twitter y otras redes sociales, para lograr establecer a las 3:05 p.m. como la hora oficial de la gente de Miami tomarse el cafecito de la tarde.

The other incredible surprise was that we weren’t the guests of honor at lunch– they were Germán Quiroga and Daniel Suárez of NASCAR, two young Mexican men who inspire us…and JennyLee Molina, the young founder of the 305 Cafecito movement in Miami! *I faint.*
JennyLee launched a movement using Twitter and other social outlets, in order to establish 3:05 p.m. as the official time for Miamians to drink their afternoon cafecito.
WOW.
Nunca había venturado a un lugar tan precioso en Miami, y fue más especial todavía poder compartir ese rato con mi familia de Toyota. Mientras contábamos nuestras historias (¡los invitados especiales tenían historias fascinantes!), y compartíamos comida, sentía el privilegio grande que era estar sentada entre tantas personas inteligentes, amables y diversas. Entiendo que esta experiencia se dio porque Toyota entiende la diversidad de la experiencia de los Latinos.
Y es que no importa de dónde venimos, quienes fueron nuestros ancestros, qué música escuchamos, ni qué comida disfrutamos. Lo que importa es que cada uno de nosotros estamos en nuestra propia jornada.
Siempre y cuando vayamos juntos, estaremos bien.
I’d never ventured to such a beautiful place in Miami, and it was all the more special being able to share with my Toyota family. While we exchanged our stories (the special guests had fascinating stories!), and shared food, I felt what a great privilege it was to be seated among so many intelligent, amiable and diverse people. I understand that this experience took place because Toyota understands the diversity of the Latino experience.
Even Mami had a photo op with Germán Quiroga of NASCAR!
And it really doesn’t matter where we come from, who are ancestors were, what music we listen to, nor what food we enjoy. What matters is that each and every one of us are on our own journey.
As long as we go together, we’ll be okay.
