En honor a mi primer blog, yo formé Team Holdin’ Out for a Hero.

Since I started this blog, I’ve shown you that I form a part of the Hispanic community in Central Florida. But since birth, I’ve been a member of another community that is of equal importance to me– the Spina Bifida community.

Spina Bifida is a condition that occurs when a child is born with a separation in the spinal column. It is the primary cause of paralysis in children in America, and it’s more common than muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, and cystic fibrosis combined.

I’ve always learning about the latest information about my condition. That’s why I was stunned to discover that Spina Bifida is more prevalent among Hispanics than any other ethnic group. Since I found that out, I’ve developed a passion for educating the Latino community about Spina Bifida and helping those who need to know about resources for their loved ones.

One organization that has done so much for me has been the Spina Bifida Association of Central Florida (SBACFL). As soon as my parents and I moved to Orlando, we joined our local chapter. I’ve grown so much as a person thanks to them, and now I serve proudly on the board of directors.

The SBACFL offers so many resources for families who have a loved one with Spina Bifida, including information for new parents, news about the latest medical research and technologies, scholarships for college students, and events in different regions with the hope of connecting the families with people who can relate.

This year, with all the economic crises, the SBACFL is fighting to stay afloat. We need to raise $50,000 in order to maintain non-profit status and continue to be affiliated with the national SBA. To that end, the SBACFL is holding its first Walk-N-Roll fundraiser. The event is similar to other fundraisers like Relay for Life, and members of the SBACFL have formed teams to engage in friendly competition to raise money for our cause.

In honor of my first blog, I’ve created Team Holdin’ Out for a Hero to raise funds for the SBACFL. My current fundraising goal is $1,000, but if I meet this goal very soon, I will come up with a new goal!

Here’s where you come in. Bloggers, and non-bloggers, I need your help spreading the word! If you’re actually reading a blog, then you must already be well-acquainted with some social media outlets. Promote this to all your friends and contacts, using links, creative hashtags, and your own ideas.

If you write about this event on your blog, I will feature a link to your post in a future blog post here and on Holdin’ Out for a Hero.

Like my parents have always taught me, with a little faith and hope you can conquer the world. Please help me move the hearts of many people so that they’ll support this event.

Bendiciones/Blessings,

    1. Hola Mercedes!

Yeah we know a LOT of families here in Central Florida who have a member with Spina Bifida. It’s so common and yet so FRUSTRATING that it’s swept under the rug– or completely ignored.

    1. ¡Gracias a tí, Uchi!

      Abrazos.

  1. I’d love to learn more about how and why this targets Latinos more. Do you have a good resource so I can read up on it? I’d love to write a blog post to help support you!

    1. ¡Gracias, Carla! I’ll look through resources on http://sbaa.org (although you can access it too!) since it’s been a while since I looked at the research articles they’ve posted. I’m sure as time goes on, they’ll find even more empirical evidence to support this finding.

What everyone wants to know, though, is WHY. Me too!

      😉 Abrazos,

      Laurita
