¡De 0 a 60 en 5 minutos! / From 0 to 60 in 5 Minutes!

$10 for $20 Worth of Mexican Fare and Drinks at Baja Fresh

The magical process.

Worth the wait!

Y tú? Cómo tu arrancas en la mañana?

Every day is a constant struggle– to get from the point where I first open my eyes, to the moment when I feel I can take on the world.

Since my freshman year of college, I’ve developed the habit of drinking a cup of coffee in the morning, otherwise I can’t start my day.

Often, at home, my parents and I have instant coffee. Recently, we brought down from the cabinet my espresso machine that we hadn’t used for months. I’ve discovered, in truth, drinking a freshly brewed coffee with milk and foam is far more luxurious than having coffee that comes in a jar, even if it takes a little longer to prepare.

And if you’re like me, you have to enjoy your cup of gourmet coffee while reading a magazine or a good book. Sometimes that can take up to a half hour or more!

Sometimes the best things in life take a little more time…

And you? How do you kick-start your day?

  1. Coffee! Did you know that recent studies show that a light roast coffee in reasonable amounts is actually HEALTHY for us.. YAY! Laurita you read my mind with the jump start for the morning, and have been thinking about an espresso machine to buy. I’m trying to find one that is good and can also foam milk, not too big and makes coffee like those big fancy metal ones, a the fraction of the cost. Hmmm… any ideas? Love your new blog! muah!

    1. Vanessa, I have heard different conflicting accounts about the benefits and cons of drinking coffee. Needless to say, I pay more attention to the positive accounts of coffee-drinking!! 😉 I wish I had good advice for your espresso machine purchase. Right now, I use a Mr. Coffee machine. It’s pretty basic– and my carafe broke a long time ago so I use a measuring cup or a big mug to hold the espresso when it comes out. But it’s not very high-maintenance.

I DREAM of buying– *AHEM*– or winning 😉 –either a Keurig or a Nespresso. But even a very simple espresso machine can brew delicious, aromatic café!

Gracias for your encouraging words!! Abrazos!! 😉

    1. Hola Yvette,

Huh. What an interesting perspective on the WHY we need to drink café. I personally have had times when I had to fast for some bloodwork or I simply get up later than usual, and my head doesn’t ALWAYS feel like it’s exploding, so maybe I’m not THAT “addicted” per sé. It’s just that I’ve simply come to ADORE my ritual of drinking café con leche and it’s therapeutic for me. I’m also guilty of sometimes drinking coffee at other times of the day, but it’s a habit I’m looking to kick, or at least replace it with decaf. 😉

  2. Hi, Laurita. I don´t need coffee to wake up in the morning, but I like it so much that I do need the daily ritual of my espresso with a little milk, just for the pleasure of it. There were times in my life when I had way too many cups of coffee. Now one in the morning is usually enough, but some days, I have one in the afternoon as well. I love its aroma and the flavor.

  3. I kick start my day with a cup of coffee. Recently I started using a french press — you are right, waiting for a cup of coffee is wonderful. The ironic thing is that my husband still adores his instant coffee every morning.

  4. Oh honey, coffee is my THING! nothing beats a fresh cafe con leche. I love my espresso maker… I graduated from a colador (the sock-looking thing) when I got a stove top espresso maker and Mr. Coffee as a back up (I learned how to manipulate a Mr. Coffee with espresso – it took a while), then I decided to just get the real thing.
Now that you’ve enjoyed the luxury, you won’t be going back to instant, no way!!!

  5. @ Vanessa: Like Laurita said our espresso machine is a very inexpensive Mr. Coffee ( I think it costs about $25.00 ) but the frother doesn’t work very well. We purchased a hand held milk frother at Ikea for $3.99, it uses 2 AA batteries and it’s fantastic! I can only drink one cup in the morning , huge headache if I don’t, but I could smell the aroma of good coffee all day 🙂

  6. I start with a triple shot of cuban espresso and then I make myself a cafe con leche… que rico. my mornings just aren’t the same w/out it! I’ve had instant at a friend’s house and it was okay… but not the best…. fresh rocks…all the time… love your machine. Been wanting to buy one but I have 9 espresso stovetop makers that I work with.

  7. I can’t go through the day without my cafecito, preferably Colombiano;)
I use one of those manual machines to froth up the milk. It’s my morning ritual that I need to start my day. Without it, it feels like I am missing something. I only drink 1 cup in the morning and that’s it.

  8. I’m not a coffee drinker at all but have always had a thing for Coca Cola which is so so so bad for you. When I was younger I had no problem cracking open a can like it was nothing. These days, though, it’s all about some hot tea or hot water with lemon.
