El concierto de Romeo Santos este jueves pasado (28 de marzo) en el Amway Center fue una experiencia inolvidable, y a la vez, una experiencia única en mi vida.
Desde que era pequeña, me crié en Estados Unidos, viendo programas de televisión americanos, y sólo escuchando música en inglés. Es más, todavía recuerdo el primer disco (CD) en español que me regalaron. Mi papá me compró el disco “Vuelve” de Ricky Martin, y a los 12 años de edad, lo escuchaba todos los días (y todas las noches), sin falta.
Aunque siempre me ha gustado música de todas clases, mi corazón latino añoraba tener exposición a los ritmos de mi cultura.
Sin embargo, en mi familia extendida, hay una tradición musical. Mi abuelito materno formó una tuna, una agrupación de música folklórica de origen español, en la escuela elemental donde era maestro. Después de adulto, mi tío siguió la tradición y se convirtió en director de la tuna de la Universidad del Sagrado Corazón en Puerto Rico, que se llaman los Segreles.
Poco me imaginaba yo el 11 de marzo, que mi educación musical estaba a punto de expandir. Me contactó Jennifer Laney, representante de la ciudad de Orlando y del Amway Center , ofreciéndome la oportunidad de asistir al concierto de Romeo Santos– ¡y también la oportunidad de regalar taquillas a uno de mis lectores!
The Romeo Santos concert at Amway Center this past Thursday (March 28th) was at once an unforgettable experience, and a first in my life.
Ever since I was very little, I was raised in the U.S., watching American T.V. shows and listening to English-only music. In fact, I still remember the very first CD I got in Spanish. My Papi bought me Ricky Martin’s “Vuelve” album, which I listened to every day (and every night), without fault.
Although I’ve always liked music of all genres, my Latin heart yearned for exposure to the rhythms of my culture.
However, in my extended family, music is a tradition. My paternal Abuelito formed a tuna, a folkloric musical group with origins from Spain, at the elementary school where he taught. As an adult, my uncle continued that tradition, and became the director of the tuna at the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón (Sacred Heart University) in Puerto Rico. They are called the Segreles.
Little did I imagine on March 11th, that my musical education was about to expand. I was contacted by Jennifer Laney, who represents the City of Orlando and Amway Center, who offered me tickets to the Romeo Santos concert– and also the opportunity to giveaway tickets to one of my readers!

El estadio se volvió todo alboroto cuando al fin salió Romeo al escenario.

Después de unas cuantas canciones románticas y melancólicas, a todos nos sorprendió con una canción bien movida. ¡El tenía a gran parte del estadio bailando!
Mi favorita parte del concierto fue cuando Romeo reconoció y envió saludos a todos los países latinoamericanos. Fue un toque muy especial.
A la verdad que creo que ahora escucharé el género de bachata en un tono diferente — profundo, romántico, y sobre todo, apasionado.

(Oh, y también Romeo le dio mil dólares al hombre que mejor cantara una de sus canciones. Está bien– no gané esta vez por ser mujer y por no saber las canciones, pero para la próxima.) 😉
After quite a few romantic and melancholy ballads, he surprised us all with a very upbeat song. He had a huge portion of the arena dancing!
My favorite part of the concert was when Romeo recognized and gave a shout-out to all the Latin American countries. It was a very special touch.
I really think that now I’ll be listening to the genre of bachata in a different tone — deep, romantic, and above all, passionate.

(Oh, and Romeo also gave $1,000 to the man who could best sing one of his songs. It’s okay– I didn’t win this time because I didn’t know the songs and because I’m a woman, but next time it’s mine.) 😉
